David Gould OAM

David Gould is a very determined and dedicated man with strong ambitions who is in search of excellence in his chosen field in sport – basketball.

David was just 12 years old when his life and love of basketball took a dramatic turn. One which saw him laying in the balance of life and death.A near fatal shooting accident left David facing the prospect of spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair – a paraplegic – and not being able to pursue his sporting career.

To avoid total disassociation from basketball, David took on the challenge to coach junior basketball.  When David was 15, Tom Ryan, who previously umpired David, introduced wheelchair basketball into David’s life. In 1989, American coach, Frank Burns, invited David to the United States for a period of eight months.

David projects a strong image for the Wheelchair Sports Association of South Australia Incorporated, and is held in high regard in the community. He is considered an exceptional ambassador for Australia.

David trained extremely hard five days a week to maintain his ranking as one of the world’s top class Wheelchair Basketballers. His hard work paid off which is evident in his inclusion to represent South Australia since 1982 and Australia since 1983.

His incredible list of achievements is a testament to his commitment to sport, life and community; portraying the true spirit, courage and determination of a young achiever deserving recognition and reward. To see a full list of achievements, download: David Gould OAM – CV
