Brad was selected to participate in the TalentEd 2011 program, which will assist him to develop and work to improve fitness, game knowledge and consistency with the goals of achieving Level Two Umpire Accreditation, gaining NTFL Grand Final appointments and ultimately NEAFL roles and beyond!
TalentEd is about developing champions in sport, but equally in life and community. Brad is currently studying Year 10 at Katherine High School and is a Tier One member of the school’s Sports Academy. In his downtime he enjoys fishing and motorbike riding and movies like most young people!
Starwin Management commends Brad on his commitment to the community, throughout the NTFL season (including appointments throughout the final series) he umpired in Darwin each weekend, travelling over 10, 000 kms to make his mark on the Territory. Brad East
Is a young man (16 years) who started his basketball career at age 5, awarded his first representative guernsey for Mulgrave Coastal in the Queensland State Championships in under 12s, before moving to Darwin. He joinged Tracy Village Jets where he has stayed ever since; currently playing in the U18s Division 1 and Men’s A Grade sides. His highlight is scoring 19 points in a League Men’s game.
Since 2009 Brad has been a Tier One member of the National Intensive Training Program (NITP) – a national elite basketball program. At the NITP fitness testing, Brad has exceeded the national high-performance benchmark in cardio-vascular endurance (Beep Tests) four times in a row, scoring a remarkable – 14.4, 14.9, 14.3, and 14.1.
A member of the U18s Nationals NT Team in 2011 and the U16s in 2009. he will also represents the NT in the School Sport U18 side, alongside his older brother (who currently plays basketball in the United States) in Canberra in August.
Brad is completing year 12 at O’Loughlin Catholic College in Darwin, studying; Maths Methods, English Studies, Biology, Physical Education, Integrated Learning Religion and is a member of the leadership team at the school.
His motto is “work hard”, although it’s simple, Brad believes it says it all. He counts his role models in basketball as his captain; Michael Maclean, ex-NBL player Timmy duggas and his brother Dan East. What he admires is their respect on and off court, tenacity and work ethic and ability to read the game. His aim for basketball is to continue to play top division men’s basketball until he heads to Melbourne for university where I hope to make my way to the Australian Basketball Association level as a player or coach.
Brad furthers his dreams as a referee. At aged nine he started (youngest in the league by at least 4 years), and is currently the youngest referee at league level. Additionally he was also the youngest and only junior referee at the last two Arafura Games in 2009 and 2011. Referee roles at National Tournaments, since 13, starting at the Pacific School Games where he achieved a higher ranking than any other NT referee to ever attend the tournament, he went on to be a top level referee at the Australian Club Championships at just 14 years and three years later received his first gold medal match at the Australian School Championships in Darwin 2010. Brad’s next aim is to receive a semi-final (high ranking) at the Australian Club Championships here in Darwin in September this year.
Named ‘Referee of the Year’ in 2009, Brad is now in training to become a referee coach, having already worked as a supervisor and coordinator. When Brad reaches 18 he hopes to take the next step up in ranking, as he currently sits as the highest ranking junior referee in the NT and is well respected in his role. His referee role models are Sally Kearns from Canberra and Jess Lloyd from Albury for their ability to understand and control a game of basketball better than anyone I have ever seen.
Hopefully one day Brad will be gracing the National Basketball League courts as a professional referee and possibly even further to the Olympics, not only as a referee, but as a referee coach. He is a young man that aspires to the highest level and is willing to work hard to make it all the way!
