Janice Walker is a respected Community member and Elder of the Kuku Yalanji Tribe in Mossman/Daintree Far North Queensland. Growing up on Kuku Yalanji country Janice has always felt a strong connection to the land, sea and waterways and enjoys practicing traditional customs and passing these onto future generations.
Janice is an active advocate and advisor on Stolen Generation as she is a strong survivor of the Assimilation policies. Janice has educated primary and secondary school children for the past 40 years and strongly supports the teaching of Kuku Yalanji language within the school system. Janice also Pastors the Community Church located within the Mossman Gorge Community and provides meal distribution, clothing, housing and emotional support to vulnerable community members.
Janice has always grounded her children, grandchildren and extended families in their cultural identity and taught them to always know who they are and where they come from. Janice’s family history has been at the forefront of her upbringing and has helped shape her to be the person that she is today.
